Food Can Metal Packaging Laser Marking

Food can metal packaging laser marking is rapidly growing in popularity in the metal food packing sectors, such an laser marking on tin food cans. This technology presents numerous advantages to these industries, such as:

  • The ability to create high-quality text, imagery, and logos
  • Unambiguous marking on surfaces that are not porous
  • Financial benefits resulting from less waste and rework due to enhanced precision
  • Resilience in the face of rigorous conditions such as extreme temperature or chemical exposure.

Aluminum is frequently used in food packaging due to its superior mechanical attributes that provide effective food protection and remarkable resistance against corrosion. Additionally, aluminum offers efficient sealing capabilities, safeguarding the food within the packaging from the effects of gases and water vapor.

Steel is also one of the common food packaging materials, mainly suitable for packaging that requires stronger strength, such as canned food, beverages, etc.

Tin, while not as commonly used in food packaging, presents its own unique benefits under specific circumstances. Its superior resistance to corrosion and its sealing capabilities make tin a good choice for preserving the quality of food.

Is Laser Marking Safe for Metal Food Packaging?

Laser marking is safe for food packaging. Lasers simply alter the surface of the packaging to produce a mark, without using any inks or chemicals that could potentially contaminate the food. Furthermore, the process is so precise that it can create markings without damaging or penetrating the packaging material, ensuring the integrity and safety of the food inside. However, appropriate laser types and settings should be used to ensure safety and optimal results.

Applicaions Practice of Marking code on food Metal Packaging by laser marking

In this application case, we showcase laser coding on metal containers by adjusting the marking parameters on painted metal, a common container type in this industry.

The food industry is heavily regulated and monitored, necessitating various degrees of coding and precise product traceability. This allows every stage of the product’s journey to be tracked, from its origin as a raw material to its consumption by the end user.

The selection of marking technology for the container depends on factors such as cost, the production process, and most importantly, the substrate that needs to be marked. For this particular scenario, the laser that aligns best with the marking requirements is the Macsa id SPA 2 C, which boasts 30W power and a 100X100mm area lens. The photos below demonstrate that a high-contrast marking can be achieved without damaging the container (barrier material). This marking method strips the first layer of paint, ensuring that the marking is clearly readable and of the best quality.
